China is a market of enormous scale— but the real opportunity lies in knowing where the right products, crops, partners, and technologies fit
A Large Market — and an Increasingly Selective One
China is a major fertilizer importer, but the opportunity for North American specialty suppliers is not defined by commodity volume alone.
In 2024, China imported about US$4.61 billion of fertilizers. Potassic fertilizer imports were about US$3.80 billion, including approximately US$738 million from Canada. Imports under HS 3105 were about US$785 million, including approximately 1.23 million metric tons of NPK fertilizers within HS 310520.
These figures demonstrate market scale. The longer-term opportunity is increasingly linked to nutrient-use efficiency, improved soil productivity, scientific fertilization, differentiated technologies, and products that create measurable agronomic value.
Limited Farmland Makes Productivity Important
China had approximately 128.6 million hectares of cultivated land according to the 2023 national land-change survey. The appropriate message is not that China’s farmland is necessarily declining today; recent official data indicate stabilization and improvement. The strategic issue is that China has limited farmland relative to the scale of its food-production needs.
National agricultural policy therefore emphasizes protecting farmland quantity and quality, improving soil productivity, using inputs more efficiently, and promoting scientific fertilization.
China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs reported fertilizer-use efficiency of 42.6% for rice, corn, and wheat in 2024. Current policy continues to promote new technologies, new products, and higher-efficiency fertilizer systems.
China Is Not One Market
Product → Crop → Region → Channel → Buyer → Commercial Model
A technically strong product can still fail if it is matched to the wrong crop, region, distributor, price architecture, or commercialization model. VerdaCrop’s China-market experience helps screen these variables before supplier and buyer resources are invested.

What Happens When There Is a Fit?
We will create a process built around your product’s potential.
-
Let us understand your product, technology, manufacturing capabilities, target applications, and current markets.
-
We assess your offering against relevant crops, regions, market needs, and potential buyer requirements in China. The goal is to determine whether there is a credible commercial opportunity before significant time and resources are invested.
-
Once there appears to be a potential fit, we work through the practical details needed for China-market evaluation. This helps establish whether the product can meet buyer expectations and support a commercially viable transaction.
-
Where a qualified buyer fit is established, we help facilitate the technical and commercial process toward a potential purchase order. This may include finalizing product requirements, quantities, pricing, terms, logistics, and export arrangements.
